Microbiological Findings of Legionellae in the Manufacture of Flat Glass: Health Risk Assessment

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Legionellosis is an acute respiratory and lung disease caused by bacteria of the genus Legionella. Natural and manmade aquatic environments are the major reservoirs of Legionellae. Transmission to humans occurs through inhalation of infectious aerosols. 104 samples of water intended primarily for the cooling process in flat glass factories were examined. All samples contained varying amounts of the legionellae bacteria which are pathogenic for humans. The most serious finding was Legionella pneumophila sg.1, sbg. Pontiac. Saprophytic strains (L. rubrilucens, L. nautarum, L. worsleiensis) were also found. An increased risk of the disease is associated mainly with the operation, maintenance and cleaning of machines (grinders, washers) and cooling systems. Preventive methods include regular maintenance, the disinfection of cooling water with biocides and the implementation of risk assessment. Medical diagnosis is based on medical examinations of workers supported by specific tests used above all in cases of professionally acquired pneumonia. This will also lead to improvement of the legionellosis surveillance.

Assessment of the Microbiological Quality of Caspian Seawater and the Role of Physicochemical Factors on Microbial Load

Introduction: Analyzing the health risk associated with the microbial contamination of seawater is necessary to ensure that there is not any threat to human or environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbiological quality of Caspian sea water using indicator bacteria. Some Physicochemical parameters were studied to assed their association with the contamination level of Caspian...

Determination of viable legionellae in engineered water systems: Do we find what we are looking for?

In developed countries, legionellae are one of the most important water-based bacterial pathogens caused by management failure of engineered water systems. For routine surveillance of legionellae in engineered water systems and outbreak investigations, cultivation-based standard techniques are currently applied. However, in many cases culture-negative results are obtained despite the presence o...

Levels of Fine Particulate Matter Bound Trace Metals in Air of Glass Industrial Area; Firozabad

The present study deals with sequential extraction of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) bound trace metals in an industrial area of Firozabad, India. During the study period, daily PM2.5 concentration ranged between 73.49 μg/m3 and 113.26 μg/m3 with poor air quality index of 196.37. In the present study, Ca recorded the highest while Co had the lowest concentration among all analysed metals. Mn, ...
